Water, Wave & Flume Specifications 

  • Building for wave generation and pumping facilities

  • Freshwater 

  • Flume Cross Section: 18m W  x 15m H (59' W x 49' H)

  • Flume Length: 560m (1837’)

  • Flume Sections: Wave generator, Wave generation section, 

      Coastal slope, Coastal plain, Wave absorber 

  • Wave Generation: piston-type paddles, unidirectional

  • Maximum Water Depth: 10m

  • Maximum Wave Height: 5m (16’) with Max Period of 14 s

  • Separate building for wind generation, staging, viewing

  • Wind Cross Section: 18m W x 16m H (59’ W x 52.5’ H)

  • Wind Speed: ~185 MPH (uniform), ~205 MPH (typ. BL profile)

  • Fans: 20x 16' fans – 4000 HP each

Open Circuit Mode

  • Max speed:  ~155 MPH (uniform); ~174 MPH (typ BL profile)

  • ​Use Case: destructive testing

  • Limitations: Less efficient, environmental exposure

  • Max speed: ~185 MPH (uniform); ~207 MPH (typ BL profile)
    Use Case: Higher speed, controlled testing

  • Limitations: Non-destructive testing only​

Non-Stationary Flow Control System

  • Motorized Louver System arranged into modular “cabinets” 

  • Each louver is individually controllable, can spin full 360 deg

  • Max speed ~5 rad / sec (286 deg / sec)

  • Key parameters:

    • Vertical Acceleration: 0-30 m/s2

    • Pressure Change: 1-100 mb

    • Direction Change over Time: 0.05-5 rad/s

    • Direction Change over Radius: 0.007-0.09 rad/m

  • Installed in flow management section

Variable Bathymetric Profile

  • Solid Bottom for Hydrodynamic-Only Studies

    • Fixed concrete platform with adjustable elevation

    • Offshore slopes can be altered by rearranging slabs

  • Morphodynamic Studies

    • Uses subset of concrete slabs and/or sediment 

    • Reproduce Atlantic & Gulf Coast beaches
